Seton Hall Wins Big East Baseball Championship

The Seton Hall Pirates captured the 2011 Big East Conference Baseball Championship Sunday in a meeting of regional schools, defeating, St. John's, 4-2. This was Seton Hall's first championship since 2001.

The fifth-seeded Pirates, who needed to win their last three games of the regular season to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship, finished as the only unbeaten team in the eight-team field. Seton Hall defeated the tournament’s top two seeds to become the lowest seed to ever win the BIG EAST title. Seton Hall (33-23), which had previously won the tournament in 1987 and 2001, earned the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

St. John’s (35-20) left 13 men on base, including six in the last three innings, in its bid for a record seventh BIG EAST title.

St. John's Baseball Advances To Big East Baseball Championship

New York area collegiate baseball fans got their dream match up Saturday as both the Seton Hall Pirates and St. John's Red Storm won their semifinal contests and will meet in the Big East Conference baseball finale, which will be played Sunday at noon on ESPNU. The Red Storm (35-19) used a three-run third inning and a 3-for-5, two-RBI performance from center fielder Jimmy Brennan to defeat the Louisville Cardinals, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in the conference semifinals. Earlier in the day, the Pirates eliminated the Connecticut Huskies, 12-2, to advance to the finals.

Big East Baseball Championship: Seton Hall Eliminates Top-Seeded Connecticut

Seton Hall Saturday advanced to the title game of the 2011 Big East Conference Baseball Championship.  The Pirates knocked off top-seeded Connecticut, 12-2, eliminating the top-seeded Huskies.

This was the second time in the tournament Seton Hall defeated UConn. In Thursday's second round the Pirates defeated the Huskies in 12 innings, 4-3.

Seton Hall will face the winner of Saturday night's elimination game between St. John's and Louisville on Sunday for the Big East championship. That game will begin at noon (ESPNU).

St. John's lost to Louisville Saturday morning, 7-5, setting up an elimination game this evening at 5 p.m. ET between the two team for the right to advance to Sunday's conference championship game. The winner will face the survivor of the other semifinal between Seton Hall and Connecticut.

St. John's and Seton Hall now know who they will play Saturday in the semifinals of the big East Conference 2011 Baseball Championship Tournament. Second-seeded St. John's will face sixth-seeded Louisville at 10 a.m. and fifth-seeded Seton Hall will face top-seeded Connecticut at 1 p.m.

Louisville defeated Pittsburgh, 12-2, Friday. UConn defeated Notre Dame, 9-3.

The Seton Hall-UConn matchup reprises Thursday's second-round game won by Seton Hall in 12 innings, 4-3.

Big East Baseball Tournament 2011: Seton Hall Upsets UConn In 12 Innings

Fifth-seeded Seton Hall advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Big East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament Thursday night, upsetting top-seeded Connecticut, 4-3, in 12 innings. The Pirates advance to the semifinals and will play Saturday at 6 p.m. against the winner of today's elimination game between UConn and eighth-seeded Notre Dame.

Seton Hall won Thursday's game when outfielder Dale Anderson drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to force in the winning run.

St. John's Advances To Semifinals In Big East Conference Baseball Tournament

St. John's advanced to the semifinal round of the 2011 Big East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament Thursday with a 6-4 victory over Pittsburgh. St. John's is the No. 2 seed, and Pittsburgh was the No. 3 seed.

St. John's will have Friday off. They will play Saturday in the semifinals against the winner of an elimination game between Pittsburgh and Louisville. The Panthers and Cardinals will meet at 3 p.m. Friday, with the winner taking on St. John’s Saturday at 10 a.m.

Big East Baseball Tournament: St. John's Seton Hall Still Alive

The Big East Conference 2011 Baseball Championship Tournament began Wednesday at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. with four games. Both St. John's and Seton Hall were victorious, advancing to play today in the second round.

The tournament will continue through Sunday, with the championship game being scheduled for noon. It will be broadcast on ESPNU. Connecticut won the regular-season Big East title by going 22-5 in the league and 40-15-1 overall.
