The New Jersey Nets announced today that Sundiata Gaines will miss the rest of the NBA season due to a fractured hip. Gaines, a 24-year old from University of Georgia has appeared in 10 games with the Nets this season, averaging 5.5 points and 2.5 assists in 14.6 minutes.
The Nets had signed Gaines originally to a 10-day contract before deciding to sign him for the remainder of the season. Gaines suffered the injury during Wednesday's overtime victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will be on crutches for six to eight weeks before being able to begin rehabilitation.
Gaines is in his second NBA season. He played 32 games for Utah last season, averaging 3.3 points in slightly less than seven minutes per game. This season Gaines played eight games for Minnesota and six for Toronto prior to being signed by the Nets. Overall this season Gaines is averaging 4.6 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
