Despite finishing the season with a losing record the UCLA Bruins were still invited to a Bowl Game. This is the first instance of a team with a losing record playing in a Bowl Game in 10 years. Both teams fired their respective coaches at season's end.

These two programs have previously met three times in Bowl Games, with UCLA winning two.
