Giants Add Tight End Bear Pascoe To Roster, Release Linebacker Bryan Kehl

The Giants today added a much-needed tight end to their roster when they signed Bear Pascoe off their practice squad.

To make room for Pascoe the Giants released third-year linebacker Bryan Kehl.

Starting tight end Kevin Boss suffered a concussion when hit from behind by safety Sherrod Martin early in the first quarter in Sunday’s season-opening victory over the Carolina Panthers. His status is uncertain for this week’s prime time game against the Colts in Indianapolis. The Giants had only one other tight end on the roster, second-year pro Travis Beckum.

Pascoe, 6-5 and 251 pounds, was signed to the Giants’ practice squad last Sept. 15 after being released at the end of training camp by the San Francisco 49ers (who drafted him on the sixth round out of Fresno State). Pascoe joined the active roster on Dec. 4 and played in four games. He caught one pass for nine yards.

Pascoe distinguished himself in training camp last month by remaining healthy when the other four tight ends then on the roster were unable to practice because of injuries. Coach Tom Coughlin praised Pascoe for his perseverance and stamina and for enabling the team to work on many facets of the offense despite the injuries at tight end. Pascoe played in all four preseason games, but did not catch a pass. He was released on Sept. 4 and signed to the practice squad the following day.

Kehl had three special teams tackles (two solo) in the Carolina game. He joined the Giants as a fourth-round draft choice in 2008 and played in 31 games with three starts. Last year, Kehl tied Zak DeOssie for the team lead with 16 special teams tackles. In his first two years, he had 32 tackles (19 solo) and an interception on defense.

More Injuries For Giants: Boss Has Concussion, Beatty A Broken Foot

The injuries just keep coming for the New York Giants. Coach Tom Coughlin said Monday that tight Kevin Boss has a concussion, and that tackle Will Beatty has a broken bone in his foot that will require surgery. Linebacker Chase Blackburn has a sprained MCL, and the timetable for his return is uncertain.

Coughlin was not happy at all that there was no penalty called on the Carolina Panthers on the play where Boss suffered the concussion. He was hit in the head while falling after leaping to catch a high throw across the middle from Eli Manning.

"If people are following the rules, the kid doesn't get touched," Coughlin said. "That was as blatant and obvious as anything you see. No call, no nothing. We lose a player a few plays into the game."

Beatty has a fracture of the fifth metatarsal. No word yet on how long he will be out.

The only good injury news Monday for the Giants is that cornerback Aaron Ross, who missed Sunday's game with plantar fasciitis, is expected to practice this week.
